Abercarn RFCABERCARN R.F.C.

24 Apr 10 - New Tredegar

LOST 8 - 26

Abercarn travelled to New Tredegar and fell to a disappointing defeat by 26 points to 8. Resting eight regulars, the coaches decided to give fringe players the opportunity to put their hands up for first team selection.

Profiting from Abercarn’s poor discipline, New Tredegar soon began to dominate play and had the majority of the possession. They first scored a try from a rolling maul and two successful penalty kicks gave them a first half lead of 11 points to nil.

In the second half, Abercarn continued to struggle against the home side that were far busier, more direct and aggressive with the ball. Their scrum and line-outs were often disrupted and therefore the backs struggled to impose themselves. Full back Jason Evans was successful with a penalty kick but the home side pulled further ahead with two well taken tries plus a penalty of their own.

For the last ten minutes Abercarn finally began to play with more confidence and launched several attacks against New Tredegar’s line. When it was beginning to look like the home side were going to be able to repulse all the attacks, winger Rhys Isles broke through several tackles to score a try. Back in the clubhouse hooker Aaron Davies was awarded man of the match.
