Abercarn RFCABERCARN R.F.C.

03 Apr 10 - Monmouth

WON 22 - 10

It took sterling work by club members to remove a lot of surface water to enable the game between Abercarn and Monmouth to take place.

Despite the soggy conditions, both sides were not afraid to pass and run with the ball at every opportunity. First on the scoreboard was the home side when the ball was spun out from the base of a scrum for winger Scott Llewellyn to cleverly kick ahead, gather the ball and score a fine try under the posts. Full back Jason Evans added the conversion to give Abercarn a lead of 7 points to nil.

Monmouth had several scoring chances but dropped passes meant they missed a number of opportunities. Each side were successful with a penalty kick and at half-time Abercarn led by 10 points to 3.

Within minutes of the second half starting Monmouth were reduced to fourteen men when supporters felt that a player was harshly yellow carded for handling on the floor. The home side had absorbed a lot of pressure from the visitors and their pack gave them a fine attacking platform.

From a scrum the threequarters showed fine interpassing skills and centre Nicky Lloyd crossed the line to extend Abercarn’s lead. Minutes later, an attacking move from a line-out saw fellow centre Jack Davies tackled by a defender just short of the line, but he was able to stretch and place the ball over the line.

With the clock running down, Monmouth scored a deserved consolation try and the final score was 22 points to 10 to Abercarn .Karl Kinsey was awarded the man of the match back at the club house.

Abercarn’s next match is at home to table toppers Abertillery Blaenau Gwent on Saturday, 10 April, kick-off at 2:30 pm.
