06 Mar 10 - Risca
LOST 0 - 21
Abercarn welcomed Risca to the Welfare Ground and made a bright start. For the first quarter they had the best of the encounter but were unable to put points on the board.
The normally reliable threequarters must have left their kicking boots in the changing rooms as they were unable to convert any of the penalty opportunities that came their way. A good try scoring opportunity also went begging and the game gradually went away from the home side. The Risca number eight quickly broke from the back of an attacking scrum to score the only points of a first half.
The second half produced much of the same fare and Abercarn’s discipline declined and at one time they were reduced to just thirteen players on the field.
Three well taken penalties enabled Risca to move further ahead and a splendid try straight from the training ground gave them a well deserved lead of 21 points to nil. For the last five minutes the Abercarn side pounded the visitors try line to try and secure a consolation score but stout defending held them out.
It was a fine day and the crowd were looking forward to a running game of rugby, however the referee's whistle meant that it was a stop/start affair. There were several good performances with Chris Rogers outstanding at the line outs and centre Ben Farley again impressing with his strong running.
The development squad also narrowly lost to Rhymney Rhinos by 3 points to nil. Abercarn’s next match is away to table toppers Abertillery Blaenau Gwent on Thursday, 17 March, kick-off at 7:00 pm.
