14 Nov 09 - Monmouth
LOST 0 - 7
Abercarn travelled to Monmouth and narrowly lost by 7 points to nil.
Abercarn were without six first team players which meant a far different side took to the pitch than was usual. It was to be a day when the weather would play a decisive part in the game and it was the home side that profited most from the visitors’ errors.
The only score in the game came from a speculative kick ahead that bounced back into the Monmouth wingers’ hands to enable him to cross the line unopposed. Given the blustery conditions, the conversion kick was well struck and that was the last time that the scoreboard was troubled.
Both teams attempted to play attacking rugby but there were numerous unforced errors with wrong options being taken when further scores looked possible. The home side’s much vaunted pack were made to work hard by the Abercarn side which featured Aaron Davies, normally hooker, playing in the back row and youth player Ben James at number eight. All the pack can be pleased with their performance in what were atrocious conditions.
For the last ten minutes the home side had to defend well but Abercarn were unable to cross their line and return home with what would have been a well deserved draw.
Abercarn play a friendly match against Fleur-de-Lys the evening before the Wales and Argentina game and are not in league action until 5 December when they travel to Abertillery Blaenau Gwent.
