12 Sep 09 - Crumlin
WON 25 - 7
Abercarn welcomed near neighbours Crumlin for their first meeting in many years and eventually ran out comfortable winners by 25 points to 7.
As expected in a local derby, both sides were wound up but disappointedly it was a match high in passion but lacking in shape. The game wasn’t helped by both sides having a player needlessly sent off.
Abercarn scored the only points of the first half with outside half Matthew Johnson kicking two penalties to take a lead of six points to nil. Within minutes of the second half starting, Abercarn’s inside half, Karl Kinsey gathered the ball from broken play to cross the line to score his first try of the season.
The home side were struggling to release the ball to their three quarters and wrong options taken saw scoring opportunities go begging. From a rolling maul, centre Jack Davies powered his way through two tacklers to score a fine try which full back Jason Evans converted.
The best move of the game was orchestrated by Matthew Johnson. Almost on his own try line he showed excellent thinking and launched an attack with good running angles and interpassing along the whole length of the pitch resulted in flanker Dan Harris scoring a try. Matthew Johnson then added two further points by kicking the conversion.
Despite being so far behind, the visitors did not give up and were able to score a good try of their own under the posts. The conversion kick was the last action of the match. For action photos of the game click
