03 Mar 12 - Machen
WON 33 - 8
Abercarn’s push for promotion continued with a fine 33 points to 8 win over visitors Machen.
Both sides will want to forget their first half performances as neither side was able to put together any flowing moves and were often guilty of dropping passes or running up blind alleys. With half time approaching, Machen finally got the scoreboard moving when they were successful with a penalty kick. This spurred the home side into action and after finally going through several phases without losing the ball, number eight Gareth Peebles crossed the whitewash for an unconverted try.
The second half started with a flurry of yellow cards before a Machen player was red carded by the referee. Abercarn began to play to their potential and influential outside half, Josh Steer scored his eighth try of the season.
No sooner had Gareth Peebles scored his second try of the game when Machen hit back with a fine try of their own. The visitors were visibly tiring and centre Jack Davies crossed the line, throwing an outrageous dummy to deceive the defenders and earn the home side a deserved bonus point. Josh Steer then finished off the match with his second try and his 18 points in the game earned him man of the match.
Abercarn Devils fell to the narrowest of defeats, losing by 5 points to 6 against Rogerstone. Abercarn travel to Chepstow this Friday evening for a rearranged game, kick off at 7:15.
