Abercarn RFCABERCARN R.F.C.

14 Jan 12 - Cwmbran

WON 21 - 13

Abercarn completed their first league double of the season defeating Cwmbran by 21 points to 13.

This was a hard fought, closely contested encounter during which the home side were often put on the back foot by their heavier opponents.

Cwmbran were first on the scoreboard when they scored a fine try following from a run from the half way line. Outside half Josh Steer kicked a penalty before converting Abercarn’s first try. It came following a long period when the home side kept possession, patiently going through many phases before the ball was passed out to the wing where prop, Kris Kinsey, was loitering and he dropped over the whitewash.

Cwmbran regained the lead when awarded another penalty and deservedly led by 10 points to 8 at half time.

From the restart, both sides hammered away but defences were holding firm. The deadlock was broken when Abercarn’s scrum half, Joe McDonald, broke the Cwmbran line and drew the final defender before passing on to centre Jack Davies who scored an excellent try. Josh Steer added the two points before slotting over another penalty kick.

Cwmbran clawed back three points with their own successful penalty before Steer rounded off Abercarn’s win by dropping a goal that was the last action of a pulsating game.

Back at the clubhouse, the Man of The Match award was shared by flanker Leon Burgess and Josh Steer. This was a much improved performance by the Abercarn team and all involved will be looking for the progression to continue when Taffs Well are welcomed to the Welfare Ground this Saturday.
