12 Nov 11 - Blaenavon
WON 13 - 7
Abercarn welcomed League leaders Blaenavon to the Welfare Ground and won by 13 points to 7. As expected this was a close fought, tense encounter against the previously unbeaten visitors.
Outside half Rhys Carpenter was in fine form with his kicking out of hand and his two penalties, one in off the upright, were the only scores of the first half.
Abercarn’s only try came from an attacking scrum when number eight Gareth Peebles peeled off the back of the scrum, passed to fellow back rower, Leon Burgess and centre Josh Steer crashed over the line turning a somersault in order to ground the ball.
The front row of Kris Kinsey, Tim Jones and Captain Aaron Davies were again in impressive form at the scrums and the Abercarn lineout was securing good possession however the home side did not take full advantage of good field position and penalties cost them valuable ground.
For the last quarter it was back to the wall defending for Abercarn as Blaenavon launched attack after attack, and with the home side reduced to 13 men because of yellow cards the visitors scored a converted try to earn themselves a deserved losing bonus point.
After the game, number 7 Leon Burgess was named as man of the match. Abercarn Devils travelled to play West Mon and succumbed to a late breakaway try to lose by 13 points to 7.
This Saturday Abercarn travel to Cardiff Quins and will again need to be on top form if they are to keep up the pressure on the teams above them in the league.
