22 Oct 11 - Talywain
LOST 20 - 28
Abercarn welcomed Talywain to a blustery Welfare Ground and were beaten by 28 points to 20. The visitors were first on the scoreboard when within minutes of the whistle they benefited from poor tackling to score a converted try. An exchange of penalties followed before Talywain pulled further ahead with their second try of the game.
Abercarn were finding it difficult to contain the visitors forwards and when they did get possession instead of spreading the ball wide they kept it tight which suited Talywain’s game. Abercarn’s pack was giving Talywain a scrummaging lesson and had their opponent’s front row popping up every time. However, the visitors were on top in other facets of the game and after scoring their third try held a comfortable half time lead of 22 points to 6.
Whatever the coaches said during the break certainly made a difference as Abercarn began to play with more confidence and took the game back to Talywain.
Despite falling behind to a further penalty kick, centre Jack Davies made a break and passed to winger Joe Coughlin who scored an excellent try. Minutes later, fellow winger Ryan Jenkins ran from the half way line before passing to full back Chris Symonds who scored under the posts.
With the last movement of the game Talywain were awarded a penalty in front of Abercarn’s posts and the successful kick took away the home side’s deserved losing bonus point.
Back at the clubhouse there were several nominations for the man of the match award, not least the front row, but it was awarded to Chris Symonds. This Saturday Abercarn travel to Blaina for their next league game.
