23 Oct 10 - Blaenavon
WON 23 - 10
Abercarn welcomed Blaenavon to the Welfare Ground and ran out winners by 23 points to 10. For player coach Gethin Patterson this was his 200th game for Abercarn – only 50 more to go to get his club cap!
The hosts were in control of the first half with full back Jason Evans continuing his fine form with the boot and kicking two penalties. Back rower Mathew Harper scored a fine try and at half-time Abercarn were comfortably ahead by 11 points to nil.
Blaenavon began the second half with a bang and scored an unconverted try. After a good phase of play, winger Chris Symonds was able to cross the visitor’s line and full back Evans added the two further points.
Blaenavon were able to score a further try before Abercarn captain, Gareth Peebles scored his fourth try of the season to put the game out of the visitors reach. They should have secured a bonus point but bad decision making meant they failed to get a deserved fourth try.
Man of the match award was shared between full back Evans and centre Nicky Lloyd. Next week Abercarn have a tough encounter when they travel to Sengenydd in the next round of the SWALEC Cup. They will have to be on top form if they are to beat the undefeated leaders of the league.
