18 Mar 10 - Abertillery Kick Off 7pm
LOST 7 - 12
Abercarn travelled to Abertillery Blaenau Gwent for a rearranged mid-week league match and came away losers by just 12 points to 7.
Despite the cold, wet weather both sides attempted to play attractive rugby and were willing to spread the ball wide. The visitors had the better of the first quarter and were rarely out of the home side’s half. From a maul, the ball was passed quickly along the three-quarters and centre Jack Davies cleverly broke through the defensive line to give a try scoring pass to full back Jason Evans. Evans was successful with the conversion kick and Abercarn were deservedly in the lead by 7 points to nil. Minutes later the home side clawed back three points when they were successful with a penalty kick awarded for blocking.
For the second half, Abercarn had to reshuffle their back-line when inside half Karl Kinsey left the field with a possible fractured cheek bone. The home side’s pack began to take the upper hand and they enjoyed the majority of possession and territory. In a period of just 15 minutes they were successful with three penalty kicks which won them the game.
The Abercarn side put in an improved performance on a miserable night and they will be looking forward to travelling to Bridgend Sports next Saturday to play in the quarter finals of the SWALEC Bowl.
