27 Feb 10 - Old Illtydians (Kick Off 2.30pm) at home
WON 32 - 5
Abercarn welcomed Old Illtydian’s for a rearranged league match. Straight from the kick-off the home side had the visitors on the back foot and within five minutes were on the scoreboard. A flowing three-quarter move ended saw centre Jack Davies kick ahead and chase to score a try which full back Jason Evans converted.
The Abercarn pack were in fine form and from a scrum, prop Kris Kinsey was able to force his way over the line to score his third try of the season. Within three minutes, showing good pace and strong running centre Ben Farley scored an excellent try. Jason Evans was successful with the conversion and at half-time Abercarn were deservedly in the lead by 19 points to nil.
Shortly into the second half Jason Evans was able to add a further three points to his tally when the visitors were penalised for coming offside at a ruck. Abercarn were able to benefit from an increasing penalty count by the visitors and from a line-out and driving maul, scrum half Karl Kinsey crossed for Abercarn’s fourth try and a well earned bonus point.
Most teams, being 27 points down may well have lost heart, but not OT’s. They began a spirited comeback and the Abercarn defences were put to the test. Some weak tackling resulted in a try for the visitors but this was to be their only reward of the afternoon.
The whole Abercarn side, showing good handling skills, were able to retain possession and roll closer to OT’s line. A flowing move saw the ball passed the ball across the width of the field for replacement prop Ryan Anderson to cross the line in the corner and the final score was 32 points to 5.
Man of the match award went to centre Ben Farley who was prominent in attack and defence. A big crowd is expected at the Welfare Ground next Saturday when Abercarn welcome promotion hopefuls Risca. Afterwards there will be a reunion at the clubhouse of former players of Abercarn and Cwmcarn Youth teams.
