Abercarn RFCABERCARN R.F.C.

06 Feb 10 - New Tredegar (Kick Off 1pm at Waunfawr Park)

LOST 10 - 28

Abercarn welcomed New Tredegar for a rearranged league match. Straight from the kick-off the visitors had the home side on the back foot. Their well drilled pack was able to disrupt Abercarn’s set piece play and they were soon awarded a penalty at a scrum. A quickly taken tap and several soft tackles resulted in the first try of the game and this was followed up by a smartly taken drop goal to extend their lead to 8 points without reply.

Abercarn then began to play with more confidence and began to play to their strength by running with the ball. From a flowing move that started on their own 20 meter line, the ball was passed across the threequarters and full back Jason Evans scored a fine try. Unfortunately they subsequently squandered several opportunities by being guilty of kicking away possession when keeping the ball in hand would have been a better option.

The second half started brightly for the home side and after a period of pressure, winger Fin Corcoran crossed the line to give Abercarn a lead of 10 points to 8. However, the lead was short lived as New Tredegar’s outside half kicked his second drop goal of the match.

Poor discipline then crept into Abercarn’s game and they were penalised on several occasions which cost them field position and scoring opportunities. They fell further behind following a penalty kick and as the game drew to a close New Tredegar pushed Abercarn off the ball at a scrum and scored their second try under the posts. Straight from the kick-off Abercarn then gifted the simplest of tries to the visitors and the game was lost by 28 points to 10.

Whilst the score line flattered the visitors there is a lot of hard work needed before Abercarn visit Crumlin on Wednesday evening.
