23 Jan 10 - Abertillery (SWALEC Bowl) Kick Off 2.00pm
WON 17 - 0
After the long layoff Abercarn swept into the next round of the SWALEC Bowl with a convincing win over fellow League Four opponents Abertillery Blaenau Gwent by 17 points to nil.
The game got off to a bright start with both sides playing attractive rugby and not afraid to launch attacks from all parts of the park. The visitors’ forwards were often quicker to the breakdown and by taking quick throw-ins at lineouts had the majority of possession.
However, stout defending by the home side nullified their attacks and they were the first on the scoreboard. A move that started in their own half saw the ball being passed along the threequarters for centre Scott Llewellyn to score a fine try. The home pack, in which prop Ryan Anderson was outstanding in both the tight and loose, were able to set a platform for the threequarters.
Showing great patience, Abercarn forwards rumbled towards the visitors’ line, going through many phases before livewire scrum half Karl Kinsey drove across the line to score his fourth try of the season.
As the game was drawing to a close, a splendid attacking move, again from their own half, saw full back Jason Evans cross the line for Abercarn’s third try of the game and outside half Gethin Patterson added the final two points of the game.
Despite not playing a competitive game since before Christmas the coaches will be pleased with the attitude of the players and the man of the match award deservedly went to centre Jack Davies. However, a lot of hard work is required if they are to progress into the next round of the cup as their opponents are Talywain, who coincidently they are due to meet in the league next Saturday.
Abercarn’s development squad fell to a heavy defeat losing by 42 points to nil against a strong Crosskeys United team.
