12 Dec 09 - RTB Ebbw Vale (Swalec Bowl) Kick off 2pm
WON 22 - 0
Abercarn travelled to play RTB Ebbw Vale in the SWALEC Bowl and came away with a comfortable 22 points to nil victory.
After the long lay off because of the autumn internationals, it was no surprise that the early part of the game was a scrappy affair. It was the visitors who settled the quickest and good interpassing amongst the threequarters resulted in a fine try for centre Jack Davies that was converted by Matthew Johnson.
The Abercarn pack was in superb form and completely dominated the scrums. They were able to take several balls against the head and on more than one occasion pushed the RTB scrum backwards at a rate of knots.
Outside half Gethin Patterson, added three points when the home side were penalised for coming in from the side of a ruck and just before half time, livewire inside half Karl Kinsey showed a clean pair of heels to cross the line and Abercarn were deservedly ahead by fifteen points to nil.
The second half mirrored much of the first with the Abercarn pack continuing to dictate at scrums and they were rewarded with a penalty try which Gethin Patterson converted. Several scoring opportunities were missed when the Abercarn threequarters were guilty of hanging onto the ball when a quicker pass could have resulted in more tries.
There were several fine performances on the day with flanker Matthew Harper returning to form and Ben James’ display at number eight will give the coaches something to think about when selecting the side to face New Tredegar at home next Saturday.
The development squad also had a fine win in the District 2nd XV League beating RTB Athletic by 28 points to five and Kramer Sloman was named man of the match.
